How to install a solar panel on your car
The cool box is cold, the phones are charged, and you can stay by the lake an extra night without starting the car. That's the freedom of a good solar setup. But how to properly install a solar panel depends on whether it needs to be fixed to the car, placed loosely at the camp, or power a power station. The best solution isn't necessarily the one with the most watts, but the one that fits your power consumption and your travel style.
A fixed panel on the roof provides power while you're driving and parked. A foldable panel, on the other hand, can be moved into the sun when the car is in the shade. Both solutions can make a big difference on a weekend trip, but they have different requirements for mounting, cables, and batteries.
Choose your installation based on your camping life
Start by deciding what the solar cells should charge. If you have a power station, the installation is often simple: the panel connects to the station's solar input with the correct cable or an adapter. If you have a fixed leisure battery in the car, the power typically needs to go through a solar charge controller before it reaches the battery.
A permanently mounted panel is ideal if you often go on road trips, want a permanent solution, and have space on roof racks or a roof platform. It's always ready to use and requires no setup upon arrival. The disadvantage is that a roof panel cannot be moved to follow the sun. If you park under trees, in the shade of a cliff, or with the car facing the wrong way, the output will drop significantly.
A portable or foldable panel is well-suited for camp life with longer stays. You can park the car in the shade and move the panel into the light with a longer cable. This often provides more power in practice, but the panel needs to be unpacked, secured against wind, and packed away again when you drive. For many, the combination is strong: a smaller fixed panel for everyday use and a portable panel for longer trips without power.
Calculate your actual power consumption
It's tempting to choose a panel based on the size of the roof. Instead, look at your appliances first. A cool box, lights, phone charging, and water pump use far less than a coffee machine, hairdryer, or electric heater. Watts tell you how much a product uses at any given moment, while watt-hours tell you how much it uses over time.
If a cool box on average uses 20 watts and runs efficiently for 12 hours a day, that's equivalent to approximately 240 Wh. Add to that lights, phones, and small electronics, and you have a useful starting point for both battery capacity and panel size. However, the sun's angle, clouds, temperature, and shade mean that a 100 W panel rarely delivers 100 W constantly. Therefore, give your setup a little leeway rather than sizing it right on the edge.
What you need before installation
A safe installation starts with compatible components. For a fixed 12 V battery system, this usually consists of a solar panel, mounting brackets, a solar charge controller, appropriate cables, connectors, a roof gland, and a fuse on the positive cable close to the battery. If you have a power station, the controller may already be built-in, so you don't need to add an extra controller unless the manufacturer's instructions specifically state it.
Always check the power station's permitted input voltage, maximum current, and connector type. A panel may have a voltage that is too high, even if the connector can physically be plugged in. The same applies to panels connected in series, where the voltage adds up. In parallel connection, the current increases instead. What is right depends on the controller or power station's specifications.
Use cables, connectors, and fuses designed for the purpose. A cable that is too thin can get hot and cause a significant voltage drop, especially if the cable needs to be long. Standardized solar connectors make it easy to connect, but they are not a guarantee that voltage, polarity, and capacity match. It's better to measure with a multimeter one time too many than to guess.
How to install a solar panel on the roof
Always follow the instructions for the panel, brackets, roof racks, and controller. Car models, roof constructions, and roof loads vary, so there isn't one mounting solution that fits everyone.
Find a location without permanent shade
Place the panel on the roof before drilling or fastening anything. Ensure there is space from the roof tent, awning, antennas, roof box, and open tailgates. Even a narrow shadow from a roof rack can affect production more than you might think. The panel also needs a little air underneath so that heat can escape. A very hot panel produces less efficiently.
At the same time, check the car's permitted roof load. Remember that the panel, brackets, cables, and possibly the roof rack count towards this. Driving causes vibrations and wind loads, which are completely different from a panel standing still on the ground. Therefore, the panel must be attached to approved roof racks, a suitable roof platform, or a solution designed for your car and the load during driving.
Mount brackets and protect the roof
Attach the brackets to the panel's frame and tighten to the recommended torque. If you are mounting on roof racks or a roof rack, the brackets must securely grip the structure without pinching cables or deforming the panel's frame.
If cables are to be routed through the roof, sealing is crucial. Use a suitable cable gland, sealant designed for outdoor use, and a location where water does not collect. A hole in the roof must be treated against rust if you are working in metal. If you are unsure about sealing, roof material, or hidden wiring, it is a task worth getting help with. A small leak can become expensive long before it becomes visible in the cabin.
Route cables protected into the car
Route the positive and negative cables so that they do not lie against sharp edges, moving parts, or hot components. Use cable protection, rubber grommets, and solid fasteners. Do not leave excess cable hanging loose under the car or on the roof where it can be worn by wind and vibrations.
Place the controller as close to the battery as practically possible, in a dry place with ventilation options. An MPPT controller is often a good choice when you want to get the most out of the panel, especially in varying light conditions. A PWM controller can be a simple and inexpensive solution for smaller, compatible 12 V systems. The crucial thing is that the controller matches both the panel's voltage and the battery type, for example, AGM, gel, or lithium.
Connect in the correct order
It's a good idea to cover the panel or work in dim light while connecting. On many controllers, the battery is connected first, then the solar panel, and finally any loads. But the manufacturer's manual always has first priority, as the order can vary.
Install an appropriate fuse on the positive wire close to the battery. The fuse protects the cable if a short circuit occurs. Check the polarity one more time before applying power. A swapped positive and negative can damage the controller, battery, or connected equipment in seconds.
Never connect a regular solar panel directly to a leisure battery without a controller, unless it is a complete solution where regulation is built-in and clearly indicated. Batteries, especially lithium batteries, must be treated with respect. Only use components that are compatible with the battery's battery management system and the manufacturer's recommendations.
Test the system before the first trip
When the sun hits the panel, the controller or power station should show that it is receiving a charge. It's a good idea to test with various conditions: full sun, light shade, and the car parked at the angle you normally use. This gives a realistic picture of what the system can deliver.
Watch out for loose brackets, hot connectors, error messages, and cables rubbing against edges. After the first drive, it's a good idea to retighten the brackets according to the manufacturer's instructions. Vibrations often reveal small flaws that don't show up in the driveway.
A panel on the car doesn't require much maintenance, but dust, pollen, bird droppings, and salt can reduce its efficiency. Gently wash the surface with water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh tools, and check connectors and cable glands a couple of times during the season.
When a foldable solar panel is the smarter solution
A foldable panel requires no drilling and is therefore a safe choice if you have a leased car, change cars often, or want to keep your setup flexible. Position the panel towards the sun, avoid shade, and use the kickstands to adjust the angle. Even a small adjustment can make a difference in the morning and late afternoon.
Make sure the panel cannot blow away, and lay the cable so that no one trips over it on the way to the lake or the kitchen module. If your panel is visibly at camp, you should also not leave it unattended for extended periods. The flexibility is great, but it requires a little more attention than a fixed solution.
